Introduction to Wireless Network

Wireless network is a type of the computer network that is setup without the need of the cluttered wires. It is suitable for the places where the cables are not possible and it is based on the IEEE 802.11 standards which includes 802.11a, 802.11g, and 802.11b. It is generally referred to the term WLAN and WLAN can be used in the home and offices for sharing the data, resources and internet access.  WLAN is a grouping of the devices that are connected with each other and transmit data through the electromagnetic and radio waves.

The major components that are included in the WLAN are the wireless router, PCMCIA LAN card, access point and the software. A single access point works within the range of 100 to few hundreds feet. Access points can be used to connect the WLAN with the existing wired LAN to share the data and resources with each other.

Additionally, there are different wireless technologies that can be used for the LAN, PAN and WAN such as Bluetooth, infrared and others.   The major advantages for implementing the WLANs in your home or office include the following.

Ease of Work

WLANs provide the easy of work and there is no need to use the additional component and cables to access the network resources.  You can sit and work everywhere within the range of the WLAN.

Mobility

Accessibility, portability and the mobility every time and everywhere are the keys to the WLAN.  While you are outside WLAN allows you to connect to your company’s network and internet through the hotspots.

Reliability

No expensive cables, hub/switch and extra configurations are require to setup WLAN.  No long term and expensive cables installation and network configurations are required with the WLAN.

Affordability

WLAN offers cost saving solutions to fulfill the communication needs of your organization.   There is no cabling and re cabling is involved that’s why you can move your setup everywhere without any additional cost on your network infrastructure.

Scalability

In WLAN systems can easily be accommodated and rearranged to according to your requirements.  Additional computers can be installed and setup as a part of the WLAN that comes in its range.

Installation Flexibility

Installing a WLAN is relatively easy as compared to installing wired network.  You can set it up where the cables are not possible.  So it provides you the flexibility of installation.

Improving your Wireless Network

You can improve the performance of your WLAN by implementing the following tips.

  • Upgrade 802.11b devices to 802.11g
  • Use all devices from the same vendor.
  • Avoid wireless interference.
  • Add a wireless repeater to your WLAN.
  • Place your router in the central location.
